Sad news from St Jay:Vermont folk artist Stephen Huneck, whose paintings and woodcuts of dogs won him worldwide renown and inspired construction of a canine chapel at his St. Johnsbury studio, has died.
Huneck, 60, of St. Johnsbury, died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound Thursday.
Huneck was an artist who worked in several mediums: sculpture, furniture-making and printmaking. He is known for his bold and bright woodcuts, in particular artwork of dogs.
His Labrador retreiver, Sally, became something of a household name in certain quarters — black-lab quarters — with the 1997 publication of his book, “My Dog’s Brain.”
Huneck’s interest in and love for dogs led to the creation in St. Johnsbury of Dog Mountain, which has a gallery featuring Huneck’s work and the Dog Chapel. The chapel, designed by Huneck, celebrates the bond between people and dogs. The chapel is open to visitors, many of whom come to honor dogs they’ve lost.
Huneck was seriously ill with a respiratory ailment before the publication of his book about Sally. The making of the book was an act of rehabilitation, both physical and spiritual, according to a 1997 Free Press article.
In the introduction to the book, Huneck wrote: “I remember vividly working on that first print. It is called ‘Life is a Ball,’ and it is.”
Ericka and I took Mex and Kayla up to the Chapel in 2008. Looks like we need to make a pilgrimage with Sam (who has 3 Huneck pieces hanging in his room) and the whole Pack sometime soon to pay respects...

Your life is your own, and when it gets to be unbearable (Hunter Thompson, for example) you do have the right to do something about it.
I would love to see the Dog Chapel one day, and leave a few photographs.

This news took my wife and myself aback.
Such a hopeful and creative place is Dog Mountain. We will always remember our visit there; and the artist who made it all possible
Our condolences and hearts go out to you.
